LGBTQ+ Affirming Therapy in Branford, CT

You deserve a therapist who doesn’t need you to explain or justify who you are. Whether you’re questioning, coming out, exploring your gender, navigating relationships, or simply want support from someone who gets it, this is a space where all of you is welcome. At Saturn Return Therapy, we offer affirming therapy for LGBTQ+ clients in Branford, Guilford, Madison, New Haven, and across Connecticut.

Who This Page Is For

You’re welcome here if you identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, asexual, queer, transgender, nonbinary, or gender-expansive, or if you’re still figuring it out. You don’t need a label, and you don’t need to be certain. Clients also come to us when they’re:

  • Questioning their sexuality or gender, or exploring who they are

  • Coming out, or deciding whether, when, and how to

  • Navigating gender identity, expression, or transition

  • Dealing with family rejection, strained relationships, or loss of community

  • Healing from religious or cultural messages about who they should be

  • Exploring relationships, including non-monogamous or polyamorous ones

  • Supporting a partner, child, or loved one who is LGBTQ+

What Clients Often Bring to Therapy

LGBTQ+ people go through the same life challenges as anyone, plus the added weight of living in a world that isn’t always accepting. Common concerns include:

  • Anxiety and depression, including the stress of hiding, being misunderstood, or facing discrimination

  • Coming out and identity exploration, at your own pace

  • Shame, internalized stigma, or self-doubt from messages absorbed growing up

  • Family and relationship dynamics, including acceptance, boundaries, and chosen family

  • Dating, intimacy, and relationships, including communication and sexual wellbeing

  • Gender dysphoria, gender euphoria, and the process of discovering how you want to live

  • Trauma, including discrimination, rejection, or harassment

  • Feeling isolated, or unsure where you belong

None of this means something is wrong with who you are. These are reasonable responses to a world that doesn’t always make room for you.

Our Approach

Affirming therapy means that being LGBTQ+ is never treated as the problem. We focus on the things you want support with, and you’re the expert on your own identity. Depending on your needs, our work together may include:

  • Identity-affirming counseling: a space to explore, question, or celebrate who you are without pressure to land on a label

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): working through anxiety, depression, and self-critical thoughts, including those shaped by stigma

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): building a life around your values and making room for hard emotions

  • Relationship and communication work: support with family, partners, dating, and boundaries

  • Trauma-informed care: healing from rejection, discrimination, or painful experiences at a pace that feels safe

  • Mindfulness-based approaches: coping with stress, including the daily stress of navigating the world

We follow your lead on language, pronouns, and goals.

What to Expect in Therapy

Your first session is a conversation, and you decide what to share and what name and pronouns you’d like us to use. Sessions are 53 minutes and available in person in Branford or through secure telehealth anywhere in Connecticut. Telehealth can be especially helpful if you want privacy or don’t live near an affirming provider. Many clients begin to feel more at ease and understood within the first several weeks, though everyone’s pace is different.

Is This Therapy Right for Me?

Therapy can help if you’re exploring your identity, struggling with how others have responded to you, or simply want a therapist who understands your world. You don’t need to be “sure” of anything, and you don’t need a reason beyond wanting support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to know my identity or label before starting therapy?
No. Many people come in while still figuring it out, and that’s a valid place to be. Therapy is a space to explore, with no pressure to decide anything on any timeline.

Will you try to change my sexual orientation or gender identity?
No. We provide affirming care, which means your identity is respected and never treated as something to fix. Efforts to change someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity are not supported by research and can be harmful.

Is my information private?
Therapy is confidential, with limited legal exceptions that we’ll explain in your first session. You decide who knows what, including whether to come out to family or others.

Can I bring a partner, or can you help me support a loved one?
[Confirm what you offer. See notes below.]

Do you offer online therapy?
Yes. We offer secure telehealth sessions for anyone located in Connecticut, as well as in-person sessions in Branford.

Do you accept insurance?
You can find our current rates and insurance information here.
